Will and Sonia were in a Toyota Tundra involved in an accident with a 2024 Peterbilt Semi-truck/tractor combination the morning of Dec. 26, 2024, according to police and those who knew him.
The Fraser Winter Park Police Department said the Tundra, driven by a 37-year-old Colorado man, was heading east on Route 40 when it lost control on the icy roads and rotated counterclockwise into the westbound lane, causing the front of the Peterbilt to collide with the passenger side of the Tundra.
The Tundra continued off the roadway and came to rest approximately 30 feet from the edge of the westbound lane. Police said that a 29-year-old Bethesda man, identified by friends and family as Will Herrera, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sonia was initially listed in critical condition before ultimately dying from her injuries.
"This was completely out of their control as they were passengers," a statement from Terrapin Bicycles reads.
Terrapin bicycles identified Herrera as a mechanic at the shop in a statement shared to Facebook, that reads:
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the unfortunate news about the unexpected and tragic passing of our shop mechanic, Will Herrera, and his wife Sonia," the shop writes.
"They were a young couple and they had their whole lives ahead of them. Sonia and Will were on a family holiday vacation in Colorado, traveling as passengers in a truck on a wintery road. The truck lost control and ended up on the other side of the road, where a semi-truck then made contact with their vehicle. This was completely out of their control as they were the passengers. The impact tragically ended Will and Sonia’s life."
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with burial expenses and support the grieving families. The community is encouraged to donate and share the link to honor Will and Sonia’s memory.
"Our goal is to support their family with funeral expenses and honor their life with a meaningful tribute," organizers wrote. "Every contribution will help ease this burden and ensure Will and Sonia are remembered as they deserves."
